So I understand the LWR rad hose should have a spring inside to prevent collapse. Anyone know a good source for this?

 

I'm reading it isn't really necessary for a replacement hose...


True? I am have a slight overheating issue at highway speeds ONLY. Noticed my lwr hose is pretty dang soft and figure it could be collapsing??

 

It's not needed. It's just there for the factory fill procedure. Once warmed up, your cooling system is under pressure. If the hose is collapsing, you have other problems.

In my searches today on my OH symptoms lwr rad hose collapse was often mentioned but never as a result of other underlying problems.

 

When I replaced my hose, I left the spring out. No issues so far.

 

And that pressure is positive on -both- sides of the water pump? Hmmm. Interesting. A pump that "pushes" water out in both directions, never having to "pull" it from anywhere. They should patent that.

 

Yes.. Because the water pump on the 4.0 is a completely sealed piston-style pump...</sarcasm>

Pressure on BOTH sides of the 4.0 water pump will still allow water to be pumped through the system..

What about high blood pressure? High on both sides of the heart.. Still pumps just fine.

My hose is super soft to the point nearly kinks. From earlier reading I found that it can easily collapse primarily at highway speeds then of course restricting flow. Thus being ONE possible cause of getting hot at ONLY highway speeds.


This is what caused me to have a closer look at the lwr rad hose. My plan was to flush the system and replace the hose.


and... yes T-stat has already been replaced.

 

I would replace that hose anyway!

How old is the water pump?

Yes, I plan to. I am not 100% sure on WP age. I've only had this XJ a couple months. PO said it had been replaced "recently" It does look new...

 

Find a local hobby store and purchase a length of thicker piano wire. Bend into a spring shape and shove into lower hose. I have heard of metal coathangers used also. Just bend into a spiral.
