Default Lube Change: Dino $32 Synthetic $100+!

Not having the actual volumes before refilling the differentials and manual transmission with GL-5 lube (and still feeling the pinch of $13/qt synthetic juice for my Miata), I decided to use dino lube on the '96 Sport.

So glad I did...

Eight+ quarts later I was done filling the thirsty beast for just $32 - it woulda been over $100 for synthetic! Thought somebody else would like to know...

I've been watching Autozone for sales on M-1 full synthetic 5qt jugs with M-1 filters for $29-$33. When not on sale its $10 more for just the 5 quart jug!

The trans and xfer case both use Dexron III/Mercon, and it runs about $4/quart.

Do you think the diffs synthetic?

You can get the Dex/Merc at Walmart for 11.00 a gallon jug.

My 99 with Command Trac calls for DexII or Merc in the trany and DexIII or Merc in the transfer.

uh oh....GL-5 in the AX-15? BIG no-no.

GL-5 lube has additives that will eat the brass syncros in our transmission. I made the same mistake the first time I changed the fluid in mine.

You need a GL-4 rated gear lube for the manual tranny. I use AMSOIL MTG, but Redline MT-90 is another great choice.

I'm hip to the difference in lubes - read it right out of the owner's manual. Uses GL5 in diffs and tranny. Doesn't tell you how much - just fill 'til it spills.

I know it says that - It's a misprint. I made the mistake as well. There's a bunch of threads on it. Chrysler put out a TSB a while back about it.

GL-5 gear oil contains high levels of sulfur that will eat the brass syncros. The original spec fluid was GL-3 (by Aisan Warner - the manufacturer of the AX-15). GL-3 no longer exists, so GL-4 replaces it, but does not have the sulfur content of GL-5.

Dukie is right. Chrysler put out a correction saying don't go over GL-4.

Chrysler is notoriously horrible with their published fluid specs...among other things (WHERE ARE MY DAMN CUP HOLDERS CHRYSLER?!?!)
