LS1 or stock 4.0------
I know for the purist the answer is simple but i am torn as i am actually a chevy guy.. I have an LS1 sitting on a stand in the garage and i have a 96 cherokee sport with this
The engine had 94K miles and threw a rod, then it threw cyl4 too but not thru the block.. So i am torn.. I know i can buy the necessary adapters, and Advance even makes a new bellhousing.. But i want the damn thing to run before the winter gets here.. Hell i could even make the adapters, i work for cummins and have pretty good machining skills and tools available. But i wanted to know the opinions of everyone.. The LS1 would improve economy, Huge power gains, even in carb'd form like mine would be. and they weigh like 200 lbs less.. I can pick up the LS1, fully assembled, but he 4.0 is a BEAST.. Keeping in mind these gains and the fact that the local bone yard has about 6 decent 4.0s left right now that werent clunkered.. all for 150.. What would you do??

My 4.0 knocks like my landlord at the door the first of every month.
I'm wanting to kill it (but it just won't die), because i want to swap in a AMC 360 i have sitting or a BMW N54 if i find it. So i say once you take the engine out go with the LS1 you have.

That is what i thought you all would say.. Sometimes purists get psd off at the thought of anything but a 4.0.. Anyhow.. Now for the next part.. The LS doesnt have the front accessory drive.. Nor does it have the injection or harness.. I can find it all but my thought is this.. I could make it stupid simple if i use the Edelbrock carb and ignition control kit that they sell.. and use the stock alt and ps pump and make a custom front accessory drive to make all the factory junk work. Or i could start the source hunt and find all the injection crap but then i run into the whole wiring thing.. which sucks.. I plan to put a fuel cell in the floor of the rear of the thing and replumb all the fuel crap (rusty).. Would you guys run a carb and keep it simple or just break down and buy all the harness and such and make it injected.. The thing is that i could do carb'd for now and switch to injection later if needed.. I have the carb, cell, lines, and fab skills to do the front drive, just wanted to see everyone's thoughts..

If you don't mod it right the first time you won't be happy until you do......just do it to the max and be done with it. Then next spring you won't be saying "gah, no I gotted get fuel injected!"
It's just something I've learned over the years and made the mistake of doing somethings twice.

I never thought of that.. I actually have a holley baseplate 4 barrel style propane setup off of an old propane powered Schwans truck.. That would be absolutely sick.. That may be the way to go..
On the oposite end of all of this i am having issues.. I keep reading about how the Lsx engines have .400 difference in the depth of the flywheel-trans mounting surface.. Meaning that i would have to run a spacer to make the clutch pilot on the AX15 line up with the pilot bushing.. Or you can run the extremely hard to find 6.0 truck flywheel that is already thicker and that would fix all of my issues.. OR i could make my own adapter and make it .400 thinner and out of steel to allow me to not have to run anything special.. Either way it is going to be a pain.. but if i can pull it all off then it will be absolutely unstoppable drivetrain wise..

Anyone have one of the Novak adapters??

I posted this in the Fab section too but if anyone can supply me with the dimensions of or just supply me with one to borrow for comparison i wish to have one machined for me out of steel that is .400 thinner to see if i can make this all match up without having to purchase a 400 dollar flywheel and with parts from a parts store..
