Default Lower steering shaft

Ok, I've got an 87 XJ Wagoneer, and it had a tilt column in it that was busted to crap (def. not worth salvaging,) so I pulled a non tilt column out of an 89 XJ Wagoneer and thought I'd be on my way..
After swapping ignition cylinders and bolting it all up, I return to the engine compartment and find the lower steering shaft (The one that bolts to the steering column and gear box) is about 4-5" too short.
It looks almost like it could be telescopic, but I couldn't get it to budge.

the shaft is ~20" long, if I remember right.

So... I guess my questions are
Are different length lower shafts used for tilt and non tilt columns?
Are there any telescopic ones I can keep an eye out for?

My first plan of attack is to go back to the donor vehicle of the steering column and check out the length of it's shaft compared to mine.

I really needed this to be a one day job, as this is my work vehicle and I work on Monday, and I can't afford to miss it.

Any helpful input would be greatly appreciated.
