Got a leaky transmission cooler line on the xj. Looks like it has a disconnect about 2 feet down where it connects to the rad. Was wondering if just this section can be replaced or if the entire line all the way back to the tenant needs to be replaced? When I look it up on parts stores websites I can only find the whole line all the way to tranny
Should be a hard line at the trans, then transition to a flex line with the "quick disconnect" at the radiator. Note the QD is not the same at the trans as it is at the rad. The rad requires the tool to depress the metal fingers inside to release it.
The fitting looks like this:
You can get just the replacement fitting with a barbed end. Dorman # 800-717. Prices vary greatly depending on source.
Thank you appreciate your reply and the part #. Mine is leaking from the crimped part of the connection but after looking at the part # you provided I should be able to cut the crimp off and install the part you suggested with a hose clamp and be on my way. Thank you so much didn’t want to replace the entire line
If the crimp is leaking, you can cut the crimp off, then trim up the end of the hose and use a hose clamp. Use a Dremel if you have one. You can even use a hacksaw. Just cut at around 45 deg
I went ahead and repaired the cooler line using some hose clamps however the line itself is going to need replacement soon as the rubber section is pretty old and brittle.
Is there a preferred manufacturer when it comes to cooler lines? Rock Auto has a couple to choose from, Local parts stores carry them as well. If theres a preferred brand id greatly appreciate any info before i purchase
The Dorman # 800-717 looked like a good replacement, but at 1/2-inch diameter, it was too big for my 1990 Cherokee XJ automatic transmission line. I needed 3/8-inch so I got Dorman 800-082 which is a perfect size fit. The only downside is the smaller one is made from plastic and labeled as a fuel-injector fitting.
