It's hard to believe a gallon of fuel in the crankcase would be noticeable "suddenly".

This happens a lot on motorcycles when the float sticks. Somehow you have too much gas getting in one or more cylinders which I suppose you already know that. Your rings don't have to be bad for the gas to flow down to the crankcase. I would say one of your injectors have a problem.

I'm sure it wasn't suddenly. I just didn't notice it until now.
