now i know what too look for, I'm not ready to run alloy shafts up front yet just want something a little stronger and that seems to be the ticket
dumb question but a good friend of mine has a set of 30 shafts from his 03 TJ sport that he said i could have if they work in the XJ 30 housing.

yes, they will slide right in, BUT only if you have a non-disconnect d30. then you can upgrade those 297 joints for the 760 joints.
those shafts will work in the d30 disconnect axle housing, but it takes a little bit of work to do so.
edit- just noticed you have a 92, that should be non disconnect, so you should be fine.
non disco i'll upgrade the u-joints before they go in then when I pull the stock shafts out rebuild them too so i have good trail spares.

For that D35 you can get alloy axle shafts for around $155..pretty decent upgrade if you are not ready or do not want to go up to a 97+ 8.25. I am just going to get new shafts myself since I have a limited slip D35 and I also have a set of 297 axle shafts for the front. Will work fine for my style of offroading since I do not do rock or overly extreme wheeling. How you setup your rig will depend on how you wheel it. If you do extreme wheeling and rocks then 8.25 with 29 spline shafts is a must if not IMHO the D35 is fine for most mild to light offroading. Just an opinion nothing more.

Im not sure but i think 96+have 29 spline shafts in the dana 30.
And by the way which is better a dana 44 or a 8.25,ive always assumed the 44.

If I had my preferrence it would be the D44, no c-clip if memory serves and a tough larger gears. Also you have much much more aftermarket support and IMHO they are just a stronger and better axle.Originally Posted by gabe

Also there is no difference in the D30's from say 91-99 when they became non disconnect axles. In 2000 they moved to a low pinion D30 which is when they became different.
well i have a 8.25 rear so going to do a 29 spline upgrade to that later down the road, the 96+s have the bigger u-joint. I'm going to put in some TJ shafts because they are free after i do a u-joint replacement to it.

this is good info. while i was at the local pick n' pull the other day i noticed a bunch of earlier XJs. So now i can go back and find some with abs.
Q: what size socket do i need to take off the front hubs? is it the same as a 2000 XJ?
