I started my 98 sport xj up yesterday and while in park there was a very loud violent vibration from the rear right. Put her in drive and started rolling (not touching the gas) - no change. As soon as I stepped on the gas it went away.

What the h*ll could that have been?

 

Loose exhaust? Or maybe it was from somewhere else, but you just thought you heard/felt it from the right rear.. like exhaust resting on the cross member, motor mounts going bad, tranny mount going bad, etc...

 

I had a similar vibration a while back and it was the tail pipe vibrating against the heat shield on the fuel tank.

 

I thought all of those but all are pretty solid. Yet another jeep mystery.
