Loud Squeal when A/C comes on. Belt is tight
I've got an odd issue with my XJ. When I first turn the A/C on, it always squeals a bit as if the drivebelt is loose, but I've properly adjusted the belt tension, tried loosening it a bit, tightening it a bit, and no luck. This morning I took the adjustment pulley off to see if that was the culprit, and the bearings in it are fine, and it spins fine. It only squeals when the A/C comes on, and I can't visually see any pulley slowing down or slipping when the A/C turns on. After 15-30 sec, it stops and isnt a problem.
Any ideas?
thanks

Start it when cold and let it make noise for the 10-15 second then shut it down and feel the pulleys for heat. The hot one will be the squealer.
Or it could just be loose/bad belt.

The belt is already pretty tight, but I'll give it a shot, I don't want to over tighten it and ruin all the berrings in the pulleys. Also, my adjuster pulley, while it spins fine, isn't as free spinning as the rest, so my dad picked me up a replacement. They're cheap anyway, but I'll install it, tighten everything and report back.

over charged ac systems might cause this too. i've seen it on a couple cars anyways. last one was an HHR. the guy just had the system recharged at the dealer, and they WAY over charged it. when he turned on his defrost or ac, the belt would squeal or the motor would bog down. i told him to go to another shop and get the pressures checked and thats what they found. may or may not be your problem. dunno.

I'm not entirely sure what it was, but its fixed. I think it was a combination of the adjuster pulley and it being a bit tighter. It doesn't feel much if any tighter than it was, but now it doesn't squeal. I drove it around for some errands and turned the A/C on/off a few time and never heard a sound.
