Default Loud noise when steering

I've began to notice that the noise is getting a lot louder than usual.
I checked oil 2 weeks ago and it was still full.

What else could it be ?

What kind of noise? Popping, grinding, whinning,??? Does it get louder as you rev the engine or only when you turn??

Could be a lot of things. It would help if you gave us the year, engine, transmission plus any modifications that have been done to it, and a general description of where you think the noise is coming from and what you and Jeep are doing when you hear the noise. Plus, as lukc22 said, what kind of noise? a repeating clunk is a lot different than a constant whine or a metallic grinding.

Give us some more details and I'm sure we can help you track it down.

I've heard using the Lucas power steering fluid can sometimes resolve issues with noisy steering. I'm in the process of replacing my pump, which was leaking badly. I'm going to use Lucas fluid to see how it works.

BTW, I've been to Willemstad! It was back in the late 1980s and I really enjoyed it. I was especially impressed with the Amstel brewery which turns seawater into beer. That's a beautiful thing.

i would mix it and not use straight lucas if in a cold climate. i did use a bit of it when a seal in my steering box started to weep a little. did stop it and it has been a few years too. but the stuff is wicked thick. i would not want just lucas in it when starting it up in well below 0 temps like some mornings up here in maine.

Thanks for the replies guys.
It's a continuous whine when steering.
It's the same noise the steer normally makes but only louder.
It does get louder when revving but only when I'm steering so I assume that it has indeed something to do with my steering.

The Jeep is a 98' 4x4 SE sport with an auto transmission.
Everything is stock except for my 2'' lift kit and offroad tires.
We also added a skid plate under the tranny but I don't think that it causes the problem.

And Klutch, glad you enjoyed it. Too bad the Brewery shut down, but on the bright side.. there is a brewery in the making right now. I only wish it was my brewery xD
Come over anytime, you're always welcome to go offroading with me and the Offroad Maniacs.

I recently tightened up the serpentine belt on my '00 XJ. The steering is now easier and quieter and the none engine noises under the bonnet are greatly reduced.
It's a 5 minute job and it might be worth a try. If the belt is slipping a little the power steering pump won't be getting as much drive as it might like.

Though slightly unrelated. Fords official fix the noisy power steering pumps is just to use atf instead. Worked on my Taurus I sold for my jeep. Don't see what it could hurt here.
