I'm having the same problem with speeds above 40. Once it gets there it feels like it's starved for power. I almost have to put the pedal to the floor on hills with little response. Any speeds below that throttle response is great.

Could the fuel pump be the reason for the lack of power?

Ok ordered a new pump yesterday but the has gauge has been acting up too. I can sit at a stop light and watch the gauge go down a quarter tank! Do I need a sending unit also? Because I can't find one anywhere...

And it's not leaking or using the gas, when it's first started it shows the actual reading.

I think the gauge Seder is integrated with the pump, if you bought a whole new assembly and not a "universal" pump...

I couldn't find a complete pump/sender assembly for the 12 gallon tanks. Only pumps.
And I couldn't find the sender by it self either, only universal top mounts and mine is on the side.

I parked this XJ in 2015, just resurrected it last week...same pump still hums.
Been humming along for at least 15yrs if PO was honest.
I may change it soon.

Most ‘87 model-year 4.0L Cherokees did not have a ballast resistor to quiet the pumps some. Mine does not, and it is not that loud. The original was still running when I replaced the fuel tank two years ago.

And, there is no corolation with the evaporative canister… It was under the hood when it left the assembly line.
