Hello all,

Just recently started experiencing a loud chirp, sounds like a loud bird in my engine bay. Gets faster and louder as the engine revs. Tried to narrow it down and it sounded like the power steering pulley, but then it sounds like it's coming from the crank pulley. Not sure how to narrow this down, or a fix.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Could it be the belt?
Tighten it a little and see.

Idler pulley - chirp that sometimes almost sounds like a whining puppy. $10-15 part at most auto stores. You have to loosen the belt (so if it's time for a new belt might as well replace that too)

I'm pretty sure that's actually a proctologist's stethoscope, but they work pretty well for vehicles too.

Maybe i'm a little slow, but putting a stethoscope on a fast moving pulley doesn't seem too safe to me.

You don't put it on the pulley. In the case of the idler pulley you put it on the bolt holding it down or some part of the engine block immediately behind the pulley, either way be very careful.

You can also take the probe off and use it to help isolate noises.

Easier than us trying to hear it from where we are........
