Default Lots of cold start engine noise after synthetic oil

2000' XJ Sport 4.0L AW4
95k miles

Hi, I recently changed my oil to the following oil:

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10w40
Wix filter

Every morning when I first crank it up, I get a lot of upper engine clatter which I did not get before the oil change. It goes away after a few seconds.

Temp approx. 65 degrees

Should I go with a thinner oil?

Yes you should run lighter oil. 5w whatever.

However, which WIX filter did you spin on? It sounds like you either got one without an anti drain-back valve or it's defective. You described a dry start which oil alone can't do.

Black wix filter. Asked for the one to fit the Jeep @ Oriellys.

Most of their filters are black and many fit lol.

I'd go back and get a WIX 51515.

The filter they sold me is:
Wix 51085

It is much larger in diameter than the flange it screws on. Come to think of it, I think it came from Rock Auto. I bought 5 of them.

How long does it take for the oil pressure gauge to rise each morning.

Try a different filter and see if the problem goes away. 10w-40 should be fine.

Going to screw on a new filter this afternoon. I will report back tomorrow.

Like I said, this all started when I changed the oil. The filter that was on it was an off brand and was smaller. Previous owner had taken it up to the 20min oil change place.

Original poster needs to go to 10W-30 or 5W-30 with Mobil 1.

His Wix filter number is correct.

However, the owner's manual in my '87 does not recommend 5W-30 above 60* F, IIRC.

If this does not fix it, I may put in an ignition cut off switch so I can prime the thing before it gets up to rpm.

When the engine first starts oil pressure is zero until it builds up to your cold idle oil pressure (60 psi). Then as the oil heats up it thins out. That's where your hot idle oil pressure (20 psi) comes from.

After you change the oil and filter, it will take a little longer for that pressure to rise the first time. Your CHECK GAUGES light might even come on for a second.

Ok. So it has been concerning me since i noticed it. Ive been running shell rotella triple t 10w-30 and a quart of marvel mystery oil for the last several oil changes. I startup and its at 60 and giving it gas it goes up to 80. Is that going to hurt the jeep any?
