Hi, I recently changed my oil to the following oil:
Mobil 1 Full Synthetic 10w40
Wix filter
Every morning when I first crank it up, I get a lot of upper engine clatter which I did not get before the oil change. It goes away after a few seconds.
Temp approx. 65 degrees
Should I go with a thinner oil?

Yes you should run lighter oil. 5w whatever.
However, which WIX filter did you spin on? It sounds like you either got one without an anti drain-back valve or it's defective. You described a dry start which oil alone can't do.

The filter they sold me is:
Wix 51085
It is much larger in diameter than the flange it screws on. Come to think of it, I think it came from Rock Auto. I bought 5 of them.

Like I said, this all started when I changed the oil. The filter that was on it was an off brand and was smaller. Previous owner had taken it up to the 20min oil change place.

Original poster needs to go to 10W-30 or 5W-30 with Mobil 1.
His Wix filter number is correct.
However, the owner's manual in my '87 does not recommend 5W-30 above 60* F, IIRC.

After you change the oil and filter, it will take a little longer for that pressure to rise the first time. Your CHECK GAUGES light might even come on for a second.

When the engine first starts oil pressure is zero until it builds up to your cold idle oil pressure (60 psi). Then as the oil heats up it thins out. That's where your hot idle oil pressure (20 psi) comes from.
