Default loosing lug nuts

Hello, I am new here, I drive a 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if it's common for the lug nuts to loosen and fall off? This has happened to me twice, once about 3 years ago and again this past week end. I had new tires put on at the same garage I have used for years, a friend told me he's heard of this happening. Any info would be great.
Thank-you

Any time you loosen a lug nut, it has to be reseated. This means that whenever you change, or rotate tires, or take a wheel off for any reason, you have to retorque the lugs. They have the entire weight of your vehicle riding on them, and require some looking after. Every time I change my oil, I check my lugs, unless I'm rotating the tires, in which case they all get "looked after"!! The rule of thumb is after 100 miles you are to retorque your lugs, after removal. This is why some shops ask you to come back to have them checked after they have performed work. I have only had to retighten them at the 100 mile mark, and from there they seem good to go. I still will throw a wrench on them from time to time to make sure though. Losing a wheel at hwy speed does not sound all that appealing to me!! LOL!!

sometimes they can be cross thread. or what i've heard happening is that you can tighten them so tight to the point they actually loosen.

80-90 lbs/ft is about right.

No, it is not normal for them to loosen up.

Your shop, or rather the person doing the work, is incompetent.
