I have a HP D30 with 4.11 Gears my pinion is loose i did not do the install on gears and was wondering since its shimmed instead of a crush sleeve can i put a pry bar on the inside and a impact wrench on outside and tighten the pinion nut down?? i know it takes a lot and i think the previous owner had just fubar'd around with the gears

 

Yes, as long as you're certain there's no crush sleeve and the you're certain that the pinion preload shims are correct.
