It's kind of personal opinion, my opinion is 96 or 97. They are essentially the same jeep, just different body styles, have the best engine, and are high pinion front axle, and some other small things.

Get a different insurance company....screw them.
If it is old...have you you tried Hagerty. They do old stuff.
Agree...1997-1999 probably the best overall unless you like the Renix idea (it isn't a bad argument). 2000-2001 are better IF the 0331 head issue has been dealt with. I'm not sad I have a 2000 in the end, but look forward to someday swapping out the head for a head that doesn't have a chance of cracking.

I don't know your finances....but I built credit fast as hell by putting cash into CDs then borrowing 75% of the value against them, and paying the loan off in six months. Tended to be faster and allowed my "available" credit limits to accelerate faster as well. Just a side note. Again, don't know your situation.
If you go to a dealer...negotiate the hell out of them. Don't let on that you are doing it for credit issues. Just say it is easier. But use the private seller market as a bargaining chip. Respect that they have to make money...but don't be afraid to say NO.
yeah....a 1999 is a ton better from a dealer because they'll lie about previous history. They never know! Simply due to the 0331 head. I forget...but double check, as I seem to think I recently saw some 1999s had the 0331 head. But it doesn't make sense unless some 1999s also had the ignition rail. Not ALL 0331 heads are bad...it was apparently just a bad "batch". I think the late manufacture date 2001s are less likely to have the head (if at all). Check the site for more clear cut discussion. I'm not an expert on the matter.
BTW, you looking for any spec specifics (like the Chrysler 8.25 rear) or anything like that?

I'm in Nj the company is called Personal Service Insurance out of PA I'm only paying 120 a month of liability and for a "New" driver (I'm 19) in nj that a pretty good deal.. I attempted to fight them on that but they mailed my the "contract" I signed where in the bull **** fine print it stated they will not offer coverage on cars 25 years and up

Just as a Heads-up, I have Hagerty policies on my collector cars. They're an excellent company to deal with, but they do not insure daily drivers. There are mileage and usage limits and you need to have a different vehicle available as a daily driver.

A hundred and twenty a month? It pays to be 45 and married with a clean driving record. But that was not always the case, I've had my share of tickets and insurance issues in my younger days. 99s are a good year if you're wanting the newer body style, 95-96 are good years for the older body style.
