Default Looking at a Cherokee as a work Vehicle!

We just moved "out in the country" as my relatives like to call it. It is a one stop light town. But it's quiet here and I got a great deal on the house. The only issue is my 5 minute commute just went to 50 minutes and alot of country roads. So now I'm looking for a 4X4 for my winter travel. (a perfect excuse to get a suv) LoL!

Well I've been shopping around and my wife wants a durango and I want a Cherokee. She might meet me in the middle at a grand cherokee. I'm wanting the V8 grunt but she is very concerned about Fuel effciency. So my question is how bad is the V8 on gas? I'm looking at the earlier models. Thanks in advance.

Depends on whether you get a ZJ 93-98, or a WJ 99-04. From my experience the 318 in the ZJ and 4.7L in the WJ don't get any worse than the 4.0L
But if I were to get one. I would get the 93 ZJ with a 4.0L/AW4/242TC
Durangos are pretty nice tho. My only issue with them is the IFS.

The durangos wont last as long. We had many problems with the engine. She past away at 170k. The durango was a monster machine it drove great and had a nice sound with the packs on. The durango got 12mpg average and we live in the country as well. we have had 3 xjs each one had 200k the first one had 420k they got about 18 to 20 mpg. The xj was much better in the snow than the durango. f i were you i would combine the two and get a grand cherokee with the 4.7 wj

I agree! if you need the space an early zj is the way to go, however a xj should give you decent mileage and have more longevity, you can drive it as long as you want to, they don't die!!
