Default Little help please... got a no start issue.

Update(07/06/2009):
When I removed/replaced the ASD relay, the plastic clip on the underside of the PDC broke, allowing the "female" end of the ASD connection to come loose/fall apart.
Remove the bottom portion of the PDC, fit ASD relay into female.
Fix'd.

Update(07/04/2009):
Code = P1389.

I'm going to give a little background of the events leading up to my no start, yes I've searched, I have a new crank position sensor, and a cam pickup plate sitting along side the rig, but, would like some handholding .

Rig;
1997 XJ 4.0, ax-15, 231... motor is stock as a rock.
All power accessories in working order.

Background;
Electric fan stopped working.
Drove to the parts store, grabbed a new relay.
Walked out to the rig, and while it was running, pulled the ASD relay by mistake, whoops.
Rig shut off... go figure.
I put the ASD relay back in, and replaced the elect. fan relay with the new one.
Rig fired up.
While driving home again, the check engine light came on.
I back into the driveway, open the hood to see if the elect. fan is running, it is not, so, I have a new fan to put in it, no biggie.
I shut the Rig off and figure the check engine light will magically fix itself.
I return to the rig later in the day, with the idea of plugging the new fan in before I install it to ensure that it is indeed the fan not some other electrical gremlin down stream somewhere.
Hit the key, engine turns over same as always, but not a chance of firing.
Full pump primes, fuel in the rail.

I unhooked the battery for about 15min's, while it was unhooked, I put a new ASD and Fan relays in it to make sure and remove them from the trouble shooting.
Still cranks like mad, but no indication ao trying to "catch/fire-up"

So... you figure it's the CPS?
If I head out to buy a scan tool, what is a decent one at a reasonable price?, and where do they tyically plug in...

Sorry so long, but figured it will help those in the electrical know... I am a big dummy when it comes to electrical.

TIA

Mike H.

1389 No Z1 or Z2 voltage seen by the computer when the auto shutdown relay is used.

I myself have no idea what that is.. so let the experts come in..

That code is for the ASD relay. Unplug the negative battery cable again for 10 mins, see if you get anything there. Also, Try moving the shifter lever all the way up and wiggle it while you try to start, then try to start with the jeep in nuetral. Could be the NSS, if not, then go on to test the CPS.

Jeep is a 5spd.
Off to pull the negitive battery cable.

Checked all fuses, all are good except one 40A in the PDC that runs the cooling fan litterally has corrosion on it... wierd.
Going to check all the fuses in the kick panel now...

Well...
Exactly what I was afriad of, I replaced the CPS, and, nadda... still cranks, will not catch.

Sundance,
I looked around the battery for those relays... mines a '97... I wonder if they are in another location on my rig?

just a suggestion, not sure if it would help or not, but do you have another known running xj you could take the computer out of? I would try a different computer just to be sure you didnt fry something...

So... Are you getting spark? You still get fuel pressure in the rail? Does your code reader have the option to delete the code that is stored in the computer?

Running XJ to steal from, no.
I'm thinking I fried the computer too...

Spark, don't know.
Fuel yes.

I've got the stap hooked to it and my WJ.
Towing it to the shop.
I hate electrical issues!

I will be back to report what it was when the shop gets it running.

I would assume you didnt have spark, take a plug out and rest it on the block, have someone crank just long enough to see if you have spark. could be something as simple as a coil.
