Default Limited Slip/Locker advice needed

I have a 87 and i just bought a 01 8.25 rear end to swap out my d35. I checked the new rear end and there is no limited slip. I was wondering what type of locker or limited slip i should be looking for. My jeep is my dd so dont think i need anything too extream. It would be great if i could find something under $500.
New to all of this so be easy

thanks,
Aaron

A limited slip from Auburn would be a great choice for a DD that see's very mild trails.

A lot of people will chime in and recommend an Aussie LunchBox locker, I recommend a PowerTrax No-Slip from Richmond gear instead.

The Aussie does work and it is cheaper than the No-Slip....but the damn thing is obnoxiously loud. BANG, BANG, BANG...constantly. In a DD it would drive me nutZ!!! The No-Slip on the the other hand is quite, predictable...and proven.

I ran one for a couple years in my 8.25" and my son has one in his right now.

If u want a simple/easy "follow the instructions" install (about 2 hours), go with a lunchbox locker. Like FrankZ, we installed a PowerTrax No-Slip this past June in our '98 XJ. If u go with a limited slip, I'm almost positive u will need to remove the ring & pinion and do the proper set-up ( shims, back lash), etc. or have a shop do it for u. Don't have to mess with ring & pinion with a lunch box locker and talk about traction, ho chi momma. This was our 4th PowerTrax No-Slip install in various other vehicles, awesome product, IMHO, and the No-Slip is less quirky than most lockers (no ratcheting noise in a turn). The No-Slip, new gear oil and a new cover gasket should be <$500.

if ur not doin very much off road at all maybe for huntin or just what ever, if it really light trails i wouldnt go too crazy, i would also recommend the power trax no slip. i have a power trax lock right and u hear the click click click around curves and popin and stuff goin on. though mine is DD i take mine wheelin. it drove me nuts at first i thought about was takin it out. but now, unless im drivin slow and im not in any hurry, i hear it. other than that i dont even notice it anymore. aussie same way. loud as crap. but for u i would say no slip.

I live at 9,600 ft so snow on the roads is almost an everyday thing. does that have any effect on choosing the right one?

When I installed the No-Slip in mine it was a daily driver as well. My wife drove it daily in all kinds of weather and loved it. You'll learn to coast thru turns instead of hammering the gas.

I do not like lockers for a daily driver.
I urge you to take a hard look at the Detroit True-Trac which is a clutchless limited slip.
I daily drive my rig (true-trac's front and rear) and run it over some pretty demanding trails/rock crawling. Nothing but good to say.

You might want to rule out lockers then.

I would go with a limited slip. Especially as you live in snow. I have a Detroit locker in my XJ and thought nothing of it until the wonderful lake effect machine started to crank it out. It makes this interesting and not always in a good way. Just my thoughts.

For the cost of buying a new limited slip + install you could always swap in a Ford 8.8 with a stock limited slip.

Just my advice. I went that route

Default Loc rite

The way I looked at it was a powerlock and or a limited slip locker has clutches in it. Clutches ware out. Since it's kindof an ordeal for your everyday Jo blow to instal a limited slip I went with the lock rite locker. No clutches, just pins and springs. Easy to instal, easy to maintain, easy to fix. Cheap, very effective. It's basically a full on locker whenever there is tourque being applied, (if your foot is on the gas peddle) I picked mine up for $380 and installed myself in an hour or so. Check it out

The perfect locker for what he needs living a 9500 feet is a Eaton E-Locker or an some other selectable looker, but the 500 dollar blows that idea.
As much as I hate clutch driven LSDs I think one of them or one of the lunch box lockers will be the only way to stay under the $500.00 limit.
