Default Lifter Noise (Knocking/Tapping)

Hey CF newbie with a question...

Have lifter noise, only hearing between idling @ 0mph and stops @ 40mph.

I have a 1994 Cherokee w/208K miles. Have noticed lifter noise, only hearing between idling @ 0mph and stops @ 40mph. I planning on doing my own oil changes.

I research and found that using a heavier grade of oil like 10W 40 or 20W 50 can/will help, also use a Premium Oil Filter and in between oil changes use a can of Sea Foam and pour into gas tank. have heard that using this combo will free up the stuck lifter that is creating the knocking/tapping noise.

I do not have any leaks found in the undercarriage and no on the ground; where I park. Also none found around the engine.

Ruling out getting a new engine.

Any Suggestions Will be Appreciated.

Thanks CF

The Jeep motor is a inherent noisy motor......I would suggest 5W30 or 10W30 motor oil, like the factory recommends.

Google Motor Oil 101, u'll understand then why thicker is not better.

I had a '99 that did that from new. It's a "feature" of the 4.0, which was not designed to be a quiet motor. If the lifter is stuck a solvent additive may help. If it's just plain worn, it won't. Sometimes heavier oil makes the noise worse, particularly on startup.

Thicker oil *can* help in engines under certain circumstances. A lot of people use diesel oil for the extra zinc in it that is good for the flat tappet cams, but diesel oil also has a greater level of detergents in it.

Before your next oil change, try running a bit of Seafoam or ATF through the engine to clean out some crap. If you suspect it's really dirty, go easy as the amount of detergents can dislodge crap which can cause problems too. Afterwards drain and fill with whatever oil you like and a proper oil filter like a WIX, NAPA Gold, Motorcraft, Purolator, or Mobil 1. If you have a Fram on there right now I'd just replace it immediately.
