leeking coolant out of my head/block area please help.

I would be more inclined to think a contaminated install ... Possibly some foreign matter preventing the head from seating properly. He noticed the leak as he added coolant ... so before reaching a running state.
It may possibly be as simple as a wire wire clip or portion of insulation caught between the head and block.
A Crack or warpage out enough to leak without pressure (engine cold and not running) should be somewhat visible at least it would leave a trail to follow at this point.
