Default Leaky fuel tank

The fuel tank on my '96 xj is leaking. Will a tank from a '99 work, and are the fuel pumps interchangeable?

It's hard to be sure with a 96. Probably not, but we'd need photos to be sure.

96 is a transition year, so a lot depends on when it was made in the model year. I'd say most of the production run used the earlier tanks, but went with a different fuel pressure regulator (96 only) but is still the older tank with the fuel pump assembly mounted to the front.

Towards the end of the run, they switched over to the '97+ fuel tank, and that has the fuel pump mounted on the top, and uses the same fuel pressure regulator as the 97. My FSM for the 96 only shows the 97 gas tank, but mine was made mid-run and still has the older tank with the pump mounted in the front.

Best way to find out is crawl under there and see if your pump is mounted on the front or on the top. If its on the top, then the later model tank should work fine. If its on the front, then you'll need the earlier style.

You can buy a brand new OEM 20 gal tank on eBay for $96

I also have a 96 and have a slight leak. Do you know where the tank is leaking from?
