Leaking Tranny Fluid from Pan

Hello Everyone. I was doing a tune up today on my 96 Cherokee. Changed the motor oil and decided to change the tranny fluid and filter since I dont know if it has ever been done and theres 68,000 miles.

Well I changed the filter and put it all back together. When I pour the fluid in it quickly drips right out of the pan. It seems that there is a leak in the seal. I replaced the seal with the one in the box. Is there something else that I should have done? Any other kind of sealant I should place on there? It is pretty fast. Thank you in advance for the help.

It sounds like the gasket split from over tightening, or it rolled off to the side. You're going to have to check it out. I never use RTV on transmission pans unless it comes from the factory with it. When you tighten the pan bolts, just torque them down until the gasket starts to squish a little at the bolt you're tightening.

Thank you very much for the help. I had other commitments to day so i had to let it sit and pick it back up tomorrow. I was thinking something similar with the gasket slipping out of place because when i feel around the side it is not pushing out at all like everywhere else around the pan.

Also there is a bolt that is going in but not getting tight. Once it hits the top it is just spinning and no longer tightening. It is near the area where it is leaking so I want to ensure that it is tight. Is there any way anyone knows of that I can get this tight by using any thing other than tapping it? Someone told me about some silicone things that slip over the bolt and make it tighter inside the threads. I also saw something online called Threadlocks. Has anyone used this before? Thanks again for the help.

yes, heli coils. Sounds like it is stripped from over tightening which is very easy to do.

The Chrysler 3speed transaxle uses only RTV on the pan.

problem with rtv on the gasket is it squishes out and makes little ***** of rtv floating around in the tranny oil.

Thank you everyone for your help. I took it all back apart and used some gasket grease to hold the gasket in place while i placed the pan back on and it looked like it held well. There was no leaks!

No I have another.. I am on my way home from picking up my fiance's sister from the airport and going up a hill and the tranny wont go into gear. Pull over and its leaking from somewhere else now. not just leaking though... gushing. Theres fluid everywhere! I think I have found the source though. So from my understanding and please correct me if im wrong, there are hard lines that run the fluid from the tranny to the cooler and back to the tranny. Well up near the front, close to the radiator there is a rubber hose that connects to hard lines. Well this was barely attached and seemed to have gotten disconnected somehow. Now my question is, it seemed like there was some special clamp on the top, can I just use one of the tightening clamps you screw tight to retighten it?

Thank you again for your help.

You don't buy lumber at the auto parts store and you don't buy auto parts at the home improvement store.

Both cooler lines have quick connect fittings on them. One is close to the radiator, and the other is more towards the right side of the Jeep. There should be a yellow plastic thing inside the connector, squeeze the yellow thing and pull the quick connector off, the slide it back on until you feel and hear a click.

I saw that but it was dark and i couldn't get a real good look at it. If it is broken for some reason can i just get that disconnect from the autoparts store you think?

I ended up finding the helio-coils at advanced auto but returned them when i didnt really need them
