Try to find out if its trans fluid or oil. Could be rear main or the trans seal. Or is could be higher and you may not see it. Like it could come from the head gasket or valve cover gasket and be leaking down the backside.

I find its easier to split the transfer case from the tranny. So its not so long to deal with.
Lower the crossmember and get it out of the way and use a long extension and a wobble/swivel socket to reach all the bolts. Don;t forget to unbolt the torque convertor and lines, and linkage too.
I just use a floor jack that I have welded an old flexplate/flywheel to the lift plate to set the tranny on so I can just roll it back.

My 96 started leaking tranny fluid from the rear engine/front trans area. Easiest way to tell if it's tranny fluid, soak some up with a paper towel, if its red its tranny, black/brown it's oil.

Mine (the first time) was brown/black. Figured rear seal. Took a real close look and could see fresh oil up above near the rear of the valve cover. Turned out it was the valve cover gasket, the 4.0 is known for that.

Then the red stuff... I took off the inspection plate, turned out that the torque converter bolts had come loose about 1 1/2 turns or so, letting the converter move back and forth. Took them out one by one, blue threadlock and back in, no more leak. Sure was glad of that, didn't want to be pulling a transmission if at all possible.
