Leak Detection Pump
Our check engine light has been on for a long time. I've ordered 2 leak detection pumps from ebay. The first time the seller said his inventory was off and he didn't have it. The second time the seller sold/shipped me an obviously broken part. Both refunded my money. BUT - our mechanic had pulled the old pump and when he went to install the new one he realized it was broken - so he put everything back as it had been and without resetting the CEL, the light was out for perhaps 2 weeks. It is back on now...
I do not have access to a smoke tester. Is there something else I can do to truly isolate that the problem is with that pump - before I buy another one at a cost of $150 ?

Check the vacuum hoses. What was the exact code? Know anybody that smokes? Have them puff a couple into the lines. Check out Youtube. You can make your own smoker for not alot of money. A bee smoker, even.

IDK if this helps but I had the same trouble with my WJ. It turned out to be a cracked rubber elbow on one of the vacuum lines. I just substituted a loop of hose to replace it. Has been working for 3 years that way.

I guess I should re-read the code - but for years the code (I think) has been 457 (?) small evap leak.
What is interesting was how they removed the leak detection pump and reinstalled it and the CEL was out for a couple weeks.
I've got my eye out on ebay for a new OEM pump.

If the code is for a small leak, it could be a sticking canister purge solenoid valve, not the pump. Try a junkyard valve.

Thank you dave1123. We have already replaced the 'purge solenoid valve'. As I recall that was a cheap part.
I truly believe the mechanics have isolated it to the detection pump - which is not cheap for me to get here in Mexico (new with shipping/import).
Edit : even though the mopar part is in fact manufactured here in Mexico :-)

You should also check the tank filler pipe for tiny rust holes. It happened on my 2000 WJ.
