The 1773 is 1.804" longer than the 1515 (which is still an oversized filter to the OEM size). I'm not sure what the difference is between paper and cellulose filter media though. I know that the actual filter media is a big deal as it is what actually separates the debris from the returning oil (of course). I wonder which is better. Thoughts?

I just put an M1-301 Mobil on mine and 6 1/2 qts. of 10/30 synthetic. Don't forget to add another 1/2 quart if you go bigger.

my buddy's is a 1996, earlier part of the year when it was built (possible reason it is such a lemon?). one of my she-friends is dating this guy who has an '09 with the 4x4 package, and the thing is actually pretty solid despite the fact he dented the tailgate after backing into a tree.

oil filter list *copied, word document, pasted*... and know i know, and knowing is half the battle!

Im going to guess the micron rating is different between cellulose and paper.... not sure which is the better rated though.

Good call. napaonline.com has all that data. So... the larger 1773 with paper filter media filters particles down to 30 microns while the 1515 will filter down to 19. That makes the cellulose media of the 1515 better at getting the smaller gunk. See this link for more discussion: http://www.carjunky.com/news/motor_oil/mom7.shtml. For my money, I'll buy the smaller of the two filters (1515) which is still an oversized filter.

Just got off the phone to confirm. The Mobil 1 M1-301 oil filter (same external size as the Napa Gold 1515 I believe) uses synthetic filter media and filters down to 10 microns. Again, looking at the bottom of the link pasted earlier, the dude who studied all the filters thought Mobil 1 was in the top 3 with pure 1 and AMSOIL. AMSOIL rated the best but is $20 a piece. I guess I'll be switching my oversized filter to whichever of these 3 I can get in my small town.
