Default Knocking when starting

yesterday my jeep started knocking but its only when i start it, shut it off or when rev it up a little and let off. im pretty sure its coming from the motor is there anyone who has had a similar problem that would know where i need to start before i rip the whole motor apart?? any advice would be great. i was thinking that there might be some sludge built up some where so i bought some of that stuff u put add to the oil before you change it thats suposed to get rid of the sludge but that didnt do anything.
SOME BODY HELP

Any help would be greatly apreciated

Sounds like a loose flywheel bolts to me. Mine did the same thing. Just take off the inspection cover and check the bolts.

It is an automatic transmission, the noise you are hearing is most likely loose bolts on the torque converter. If it's a manual, x2 on the flywheel bolts. Please, when you post an issue, include statistics like auto or manual and what not. Thanks and good luck!

Get under the oil pan when you have someone start it. No one mentioned loose connection rods/ bad bearings. if it knocks when you first fire it up, that's the sound of dry bearings waiting on the oil pressure to build. Once the oil pressure goes up, the knock goes away, because the bearings are now gliding on oil. If you hear the knock from the oil pan, take it off and check the connecting rods for side to side freeplay. If you find any slop at all- that's where your knock is coming from

Thanks for reporting back your findings. It would be nice to see more folks report their fixes.

Most people will make a post with their symptoms, but once they fix it, they'll never write back and tell us what they did to cure the problem.

x2 on reporting back, we appreciate it. I'm glad it isn't connecting rods/bearings as that can be an expensive fix.
