I have a 91 cherokee limited. I went out to start it this morning and there was a loud pop, followed with really loud knocking sounds. I really don't know much about engines I always have someone else work on them. However, I don't want to drive anywhere with it like this. Does anyone know what this sound could be from? I think there is oil or some kind of liquid coming from my tail pipe too. Please help!

 

If your blowing oil out the exhaust, you either broke a rod, piston or cracked the block. So, that means rebuild or new engine.

I'm an idiot lol, my bf figured it out finally apparently the loud popping sound was my spark plug, it flew out of its hole and the knocking was air coming from the hole, apparently we were blind the entire day until we really took a look and called a couple people.

 

D'oh! Lol. Glad it wasn't a blown motor.
