one of your front u joints is bad, mine did the same thing. go under the car find the joint and turn the shaft and see if theres any play in the joint.

Is this on pavement or a loose road surface?

When in 2wd, if you turn to full lock and roll slowly does teh steering wheel move or pulse a little, this would indicate a Frozen or binding Ujoint. Shaking will only show you a loose joint.

Command-Trac or Selec-Trac?
Command-Trac must not be used on pavement (unless snow/ice covered)

ill bet 242... either way, x2 on front drive shaft play. if you can twist it or move it, then it needs to be replaced. i think yours is the same as my 99: fixed yokes so it can be driven w/o the DS. my issue started out just in 4wd as well, then one day, it was bad in 2wd. there was a bad vibration at speed, and a bad grinding and clunking when in 4wd. i got a replacment DS from JY for 85 and the 4wd is great and the vibration is gone. i actually forgot just how smooth it runs...

So, recently my 96 xj has started making a thumping sound in 4wd (after offroading) the sounds gets louder/worse when I turn in 4wd. But now its making noise in 2wd. Theres a constant jingling/ringing (sounds like somethings loose) while driving, related to how fast my jeep is moving not about motor or rpms. then then today i started at a stop light and when i hit the gas and the jeep went to move forward it let out a metal scapping sound.
I am pretty sure I need to replace Front right u joint.. but is my driveshaft going out??
