So I've been experiencing this for a while, hearing a knocking noise whenever I apply the brakes. It was slower before but now I'm concerned as its getting more noticeable and faster. I've seen videos of the problem but it seemed like they were related to a 4wd drivetrain but my 99 sport is only a 2wd. What are some things I should address?

Pull each tire off and look at each brake. Is it coming from the front or rear? I would actually look at your rear drums because often when components in rear drums fail they can start making noise like this.

Rotors are probably warped and causing the pads to jump and and down in the brackets my 94 did that replaced rotors and went away may look into that, rear drums the springs inside can break and cause the noise to

Could it be your self-adjuster in the drum? There could be a failure or the adjustment too loose on one side making the opposite brake over tighten when braking.

I will put money on it being warped drums. Swapped mine out with extra ones I had after mine were knocking and it stopped immediately. Does the car shake at all when slowing down as well?

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I do believe it is coming from the front so I don't think it would be the rear drums. I also notice that there is more brake dust produced on the passenger side than the drivers side. The jeep only shakes when I'm braking going down a hill. I'm starting to believe it is a warped rotor now. I took it for a spin earlier and while creeping at a stoplight, I put a constant minimal pressure on the brakes and the braking power was inconsistent - it would bite for a little then loosen up.
