Default Kmph to Mph question

I have a XJ, 1991 and it is KMPH. I purchased the cool gauge overlay that has MPH as primary and Kmph as secondary. BUT the problem is...it is wrong. I know that on my stock KMPH speedo, 120 KMPH is the position that the over lay says 55MPH...well that is NOT right. because 120KMPH is about 72MPH. do I have to change something to get my speedo to read the MPH correctly ? the Speedo it's self ? the Speed sensor or drive gear on the tranny ? One would think that using a overlay on the gauges would still sort of read correctly. Or maybe not....so If any one has an idea on how to get my KMPH speedo to be correct with the over lay...please let me know....maybe the Overlay was printed wrong ? who knows...I bought the light up white over lay's off of E-Bay, and they look great, except the speedo is Not correct.

Can you post a picture of both?

You'd need to swap out gauge clusters to a MPH cluster and maybe the sender too.

how high does the mph go to?
stock cherokee goes to 180kph and i think your US speedo goes up to 85mph.
why not just get a mph speedo and swap it in? then you should be able to use your overlay and it should show the correct positioning.

I though that the difference between US and Metric gauge cluster was just the labelling. It doesn't make sense that Chrysler, who ran every wiring harness possible to save on costs, would develop different electronics for what is really a labelling difference.

OP, are you saying that the overlay has 120 KM/H and 55 MPH at the same spot? It sounds like whoever made these was sleeping on the job, I'd send it back and demand either a refund or a fixed version as it's cleary unreliable.

Haha awesome. Though I wish people would get into the habit of writing numeric dates as YYYY-MM-DD (that's an ISO standard btw). Writing "April 5th, 2001" is okay but seeing dates written "04/05/01" is really quite irritating.

Yep it's a joint scientific venture from a bunch of world governments, so it's all metric. NASA and serious scientists still holding out in the US are also using the metric system.

Default you were right

well I did find a complete gauge cluster on E-Bay and when I put it in, it now reads correctly....I installed the cool white overlays and everything is good. thanks for the info, I wouldn't have thought about changing the speedo to a MPH speedo because I would have thought that the KMPH on the overlays would jive with the stock KMPH speedo....NOT all is well and thanks again.

Sure - I know that stations down there were using ISO when I was there 1990 and 1991.

Caused no end of headache for me, since I think natively in inches/feet/pounds, and I'd have to convert everything...

Yeah, the ISO system makes more sense, is easier to convert, and simplifies maths with it - but I was taught inches, I fabricate in inches, and I work in inches. Considering I started doing fab/machine work when I was a kid, that's training that runs pretty deep...

I can work in ISO, I just have trouble visualising things. Gimme an SAE screw, and I can probably tell you what it is out of hand. ISO? Gotta chew on it for a bit...

I usually do dates in an "upward progressive" format - to-day is 29OCT2012. Used to doing it that way for radio logs.

However, doing 2012OCT29 makes some sense as well - it's just a "downward progressive" version (when I'm naming files that are date-sensitive, I'll do downward progressive - 2012-10-29 - so they sort themselves neatly in chron order.)

But, what do you expect from a nation of people who have difficulty understanding a 24-hour clock? It's no trouble to me - makes more sense than "AM" and "PM", and eliminates confusion (right now is 19:43:45|29OCT2012, or just 1943|29OCT2012. How's that difficult to understand?)

Yes indeed. This post composed at 2012-10-29 23:41:57

12:00 AM is apparently quite a large hurdle to some people. I sent out maintenance notices like that and I always get questions as to whether that's midnight or noon. Hmmm, nope clearly I'm going to take 300 lines out of service in the middle of the day, guys.

12:00AM and 12:00 PM often takes me a bit of thought, but it's doable.

Probably the single biggest screwup I see on the 24-hour clock is putting down midnight as "2400" - the time of "2400" does not exist on the 24-hour clock. It goes from "2359" right to "0000" (colons may be used or deleted, I prefer to delete them. If colons are deleted, seconds may be added using a point - "19:45:37" and "1945.37" are equivalent statements.

(Be glad I don't go with Julian dates and Simplex time on you...)

Except for the band (mine's a stainless bracelet band,) this is my watch:

[Damned IMG tags aren't working - copypasta: http://www.aaawatchclub.com/24_hour_dial.html#1003b24pb. First item

Which is so much fun when some kid asks me the time! It screws them up twice - most kids can't read an analogue watch anymore (I can't wear digital - screen blanks out within two weeks...) and then they give me grief about there being too many numbers on it. "How many hours are in a day?" Cripes, just what are they teaching these kids these days?

Analogue movements give me no trouble. Growing up, we had a "bar clock" downstairs. It looked like a pocketwatch about a foot across:
- It was numbered 1-13.
- Backwards.
- The hands ran normally, on a 12-hour movement.
- In the middle, it said "Have Another."
- The fob was a reversible sign - "OPEN" and "SHUT".

I could look at that clock and know immediately what time it was - to the minute. I honestly don't see what gave everyone so much trouble!

I wish we'd do away with "Daylight Saving Time," tho. I'm tired of changing my clocks twice a year (especially since there are a couple that haven't gotten the memo - I got tired of changing them four times a year, so I put them on Zulu and left them there. There's a reversible sign on top of them that I turn for the season - "Z+7" or "Z+8". Takes care of that little nuisance...)
