klunking in reverse

Engine: 4.0 Geting overhauled soon
klunking in reverse
My cherokee runs great while going forward but when i back up it klunks like there is a tooth broke off the reverse gear. Is this a common problem or is it something else thats causing the klunking noise? 93 sport 4x4 5 speed
