So how would I get the steering column cover off so I can see the key cylinder? The key does not come out but I can turn the car off.

I would like to look inside the column so I can play with the ignition cylinder but I also want to be careful and precise so I do not mess anything else up, ha. Any suggestions or links?

Default “Parking safety” might not be engaged

I had the same problem mine wasn’t even running and I try to turn the key off and it stoped and I couldn’t get it out. So I read through the different solutions and I tired the wiggling and that didn’t work. So I looked back through them and saw the one where it says to push your shifter forward so I did it and heard a click (even though I hadn’t messed with it today) and then kablamo the key is free. (Credit goes to the user for the idea, thanks)

Mine is a 98 Jeep Limited but a Jeeps a Jeep I also have a Laredo both have stock ignitions now if we do our research or get a Chilton's and a little bit of YouTube or Jeep forum if you haven't fixed it yet there's a cable that runs from ignition to transmission if it's not in the right position it will not release the key if you can't get it to shut off all the way sadly putting my jeeps to unwanted roughness other than off the road he he he try pulling down just barely as it's going to click into drive and slam it into Park not too hard but hard enough did should allow it to shut off if you're at home disconnect battery take steering column lower half off get a Chilton I figure out the cable if you love your Jeep like I do mine because it's a Jeep thing you'll figure it out I have faith use the force and a book good luck with your deployment we all hope you make it back to go off-roading once again God bless

Default Shift

13 years is not too late for an answer...

I turn the key to start the car, take the car out of park, and really kick the gear shift into park. I've had success.

Here’s the video I made back 5 or so years ago for the solution that helped me for anyone that may come across this issue in the future. Reason for mine doing it ended up being motor mounts. Changed the angle that everything was sitting at and made stuff un happy.
Now the only issue I have is a worn tumbler allowing my key to come out in all positions and have to finagle it around to turn but I don’t mind it. Still works lol.
