keyless entry.
I don't have keyless entry on my 98 classic. Or I don't think I do. Is there anyway to tell by the trim or the vin to see if all I need is to buy a replacement key fob? I have power locks.

I've posted on here a year ago, "what's this for" it was a black bulb on the headliner in the front, someone told me it was the keyless entry sensor, he said not to bother with it bc it sucked even when it was new. Up to you if you want to trace the wires if you have one

the black bulb is 96 and earlier keyless entry, 97+ is a vast improvement

It should say on your build sheet that you can get from this link.

I didn't think mine had keyless until I looked in my dome light.
Take the two screws out and slide it foward. There will be a circuit board on the back. If it does it at one point had remote entry. I think all 97+ had them there so. Also I got lucky tonight and found the fob under the passenger seat carpet, why the p/o had it there I don't know.

Also it can get pretty pricy to get the remote for the factory keyless. My original plan was to find out what each wire controlled and put an aftermarket one in the same place. Hope that helps.

For 97+ you would still have to take the remote to a dealership to be programmed with a scan tool. There is no way to program the remote yourself. You would be better off looking for the circuit board and remote combo. It would still be cheaper than $60 for the dealer just to program.

Keyless Entry
I just did this on my 2000 Sport. When I bought mine it didn't come with any fobs so I got a copy of the build sheet from Jeep and sure enough it was installed from the factory. You can check the dome light also to see if the circuit board is there. I purchased 2 used fobs on Ebay for $20 each (shipped) and went to my local Jeep dealer for programming and was very happy when they programmed them for FREE!! $40 for factory keyless was a great deal to me. They quoted me $20 over the phone but I think it was a slow Monday morning so they didn't charge me.

Do the Jeep Grand Cherokee FOBs work with a regular cherokee? My 1999 build sheet says my XJ has keyless but I can only find Grand Cherokee clickers on EBAY.

Is there even an alarm attached to the keyless entry?
I was eventually going to upgrade to one of these 2-way LCD pager systems (and so I can add remote start). The stereo shop by my house has a "$1 install" deal if you buy it from them (and they are only about $100).

The dealer quoted me $95 for a new OEM keyfob and $40 to program it.
Local locksmith quoted $20 to program one.
