cant find any kind a break down might be jy time that coloumns in a lot of chrylsers ?

 

Not sure. My XJ is a '00. I got the actuator pin out very easily. I'm sure the parts store has it. Just waiting on my ride.

 

And jyv is out of the question for me. I've been to about 8 different ingres around me and none have anything newer than '94

Sure go ahead. This problem is one in a hundred but hey it could be used again.

 

Just finished putting the new parts in. she starts like brand new! I took some pics while taking it all apart. I'll have it up in a week or two.

 

Any more issues with intermittent starting? I'm having that problem now.

My XJ is my daily driver. I drove it somewhere, parked it. Came back after a couple hrs. and it wouldn't start. After trying several times and for about 30 min. it started. I didn't tap battery,starter or solenoid. It just started. I did wiggle the shifter and rocked the Jeep back and forth while in park. That was about 3 wks. ago. Friday I drove it, parked it and the same thing. No start. I hear relays clicking but no start. I had a buddy tow it home. When I got it home we tried to start it and...it started. This morning I tried starting, no deal. I've cleaned the terminals at the battery and that's about it. I think it might be the starter solenoid. Gonna pull the starter today and take it to a shop that specializes in starters. I don't want to, but will if I have to. If I can repair the starter or solenoid myself that would be best.

Sounds like either a voltage issue or a NSS issue.

I'd start by cleaning the NSS to rule that out for sure.

 

Whacking the starter sounds good..may not be productive but feels good! LOL
Ok so there is the switch ( tumbler) where the key goes in then there is another switch and then there is a rod that goes down the column( if this is the problem turning the key is usually stiff and binds a little) Then there is another switch at the bottom of the rod. Take your pick... we drove around with hot wires hanging from the column for months, key turned rough like and all the other stuff worked but no starter. We changed the top switch but still had to use the wires...took it in that is how I found out about all this other ****. But then again it could be something else entirely...or 2 things...LOL don't ya just love cars! I do! LOL

 

@lowrange2, It's not cranking. Only sounds I hear are the fuel pump priming and a tiny click at the fuse box under the hood.
@ranchwoman, my key turns easily, but it is worn out. I can remove key in any position (acc, start or run).

 

Exactly, that's sounds an awful lot like a Neutral Safety Switch issue.

Are the headlights bright? Does the radio work?

It's either NSS or the starter.

To narrow it down: Turn the Key on to the run position, WITH THE ENGINE IN PARK and WITH THE EMERGENCY BRAKE SET, climb under the Jeep with a screw driver and jump the small terminal to the large terminal with the big red wire hooked to it. (Wires on the starter.)

You could also accomplish the same thing by jumping it at the starter relay but that's no where near as fun.

If the engine spins over then there's nothing wrong with your starter.

 

Yep, lights bright and radio works. I'm not a fan of beating on the starter either. I will try jumping across the terminals at the starter, but that will be about 5 hrs from now.

 

It will completely eliminate the starter as the issue. Just BE CAREFUL.

If it starts when you do that then it's the NSS or Starter relay.

If it doesn't start then it's the starter or battery connection to the starter.
