Default Key stuck in the ignition

When I shut off the cherokee the key doesn't wanna turn all the way back to the off position and won't come out of the ignition. At first it only took a couple minutes now days later if still won't come out. I've also had a problem of it not wanting to start in park or neutral. Sometimes if I have it running for 5 minutes to warm up and take the key out it won't come back on. Are both of these problems related to the same thing and could it be that my neutral safety swich is bad? Or needs to be rebuilt?

Sounds like you need to replace your lock cylinder.

About $25-30 at Advance Auto.

Any reason the shifter might not be fully positioned in Park?

This could be why you can't get the key out. Give the shifter a little nudge forward ( towards dash ). Could be simple cable adjustment.

The difficulty starting could also be dirty, old, failing NSS switch.

Both are somewhat simple issues to tackle.

Go here:

For service manual if you don't have one. Should help with shifter cable. Can't swear to it but I think it's in there.

For NSS info/rebuild information. Both helped me. The NSS is $$$ new.

Yes ,lots of very helpful info. Thanks guys. I am leaning towards the nss being gunked up and needing a cleaning. I'm also gonna adj. the shifter cable because it probably needs it. But if those don't solve all problems I'll. Get a new lock cylinder.
