Default Key gets stuck in crank/start and must be manually switched back to Run

Hey all,

87 XJ Auto trans. So far it's going decently, but I have an annoying problem. When I go to start it up, it gets stuck in the "crank/start" position and I have to manually pull the key back into the "Run" setting once it starts up, as the cylinder doesn't want to automatically click itself back into "Run".

Think I ought to pull the steering wheel & column components down to the ignition lock cylinder and replace it? Something else deeper in the column? Some type of cheater way to lube it up?

I've been looking through many threads but couldn't find one to address this specific problem.

Thanks, all. Appreciate you reading and/or weighing in.

It's likely your ignition switch located at the base of the column. The key lock cylinder merely moves a rod down the column into the switch. The last detent (start) is spring loaded so it pushes back to run when you release.

Next to the ignition switch is the high beam selector switch. This too has a rod though the column so don't confuse them.

You'll need to drop the lower dash to get enough access. You might need to lower the column. The high beam and ign switch are adjustable so make sure you mark their location before removing the 2 small fasteners. Plenty of vids around for step by step.

Thanks! I was wondering about this. My radio, heater, and dash lights all work just fine so I was kind of hoping it wasn't the switch itself. But if that's the general consensus, I guess I have a lot of wrenching to do under there.

Carefully check the switch and plastic connector for signs of overheating. That's typically the cause of many switch failures. It can cause circuits to not work, key you can't turn and other issues.

In my 01 the spring return force is built into the ignition switch assy, but your ignition actuator pin assy may be worn or broken too. .The actuator pin assy slides into the ignition switch. For the 01 I got 2 on amazon for under 30 something bucks..cant be sure how your 87 works. Mine was easy enough to get to. Plastic steering column cover and a metal cover plate...tiny security torx. There is a sequence to get ignition key cylinder out that you need to look up but my total replacement of both required no special tooling . The actuator rod has little springs and sh*t...pay attention and put a towel on your lap
