So my 96’s 4.0 melted its piston rings and is calling for a rebuild. The head is a remanfactured after the overheating from the PO. besides the pistons and rings, what would I need to check? And what is a good kit

If you are puling it do do the rings, do it all. There's too much labor in pulling the engine to go halfway on this.
Have the block and the new head inspected by a qualified machine shop. Replace all the bearings. Replace the oil pump. Inspect the timing chain and gears; replace as needed. Replace the lifters. Replace all seals & gaskets.
