Recently bought a '98 Xj for an amazing deal of $900 and wanting to get some issues worked on.
To start off, I took the center console completely out to not only detail, but to also look in the E-Brake. Once everything was out of the way and finally able to see, I noticed the cable was not even hooked up to the handle!
Well, I've never done anything like this so that was added to the mechanics list.
Well he checked the brake cables and said they we're seized at one point that's why the cable snapped or something. Well I have a friend in the parts department at a Dodge dealership that gets me great deals on parts so I ordered new cables for this brake project for $130 which this mechanic will install.
Originally, I took it in to get the fluids flushed. Primarily for the tranny, brake, and water. Well he mentioned he would do an inspection on the whole vehicle for free, which leads to him checking the tranny fluid where he noticed it was low and the fluid in the t-case was high.?.?.?
Now, I'm a welder by trade and previously worked in a service shop as an aluminum welder and trailer mechanic and occasional PMs on company trucks and owner operators. All in all, I would say a backyard mechanic really, I know enough to get by and have the tools to do it. If I'm unsure about something I do my research and watch some videos and give it a go.
Kind of like a fuel pump on my DD that went out a month ago. So, I guess my main concern now is I'm afraid that this mechanic is going to screw me over. Being a FT student that's limited on money flow, I'm now thinking of trying this brake job myself and the fluid flush. Would anyone be able to give some help.
Thanks.
