Congrats on the "new" xj, they will work hard for you as long as you don't kill it and jeep up with the maintenance, as you can see, there some Very knowledgeable people on this site, I was new to the xj life just about a year ago, just about every issue I've had, no one has ever had a problem throwing their no how to me and getting me back in the road! If you want to listen to the kid behind the counter, go right ahead, I suggest you don't lol do a search a search on here and if you can't find the same issue, ask away!
Good luck and enjoy her

It is actually not that hard to pull the front end of an XJ apart and the parts are pretty cheap (especially used), if you have a relatively common paint color it shouldn't be too hard to find color-matching parts at a Junk yard, but if you have an uncommon color you may have to have the parts painted to match and a body shop will likely charge about $500 to do this (independent shop, dealers would charge more). Though you can get pretty close (but not perfect) with a few cans of dupli-color and careful application.

Yes ,as much as I love old-muscle cars and old trucks/SUVs, I've been stuck behind a few in traffic and it is not a fun experience, the fumes are awful and can make you nauseous (ones made before cats were mandated).
Some people, like me, live in counties that don't mandate smog checks. Lots of straight pipes here.

Very few countries use any emissions control at all. China uses nothing at all, really, thats a lot of people poluting the air! India is worse! Our friends in South America don't use the emissions control goblins on their engines. Which leaves us, some other smaller countries (Canada in some places) as the only ones concerned about the air quality. Don't ever speak of removing the cat converter. It does help lower emissions but is not very efficient. And don't get me started on the corn squeezins in the gasoline. Do you realize how much we lose in miles per gallon? On top of that you subsidize that industry with your tax dollars. My biggest concern with our older engines isn't keeping them running, its complying with new emission restrictions which are sure to keep us from driving the Jeep family of vehicles as long as they will last.

That must be nasty, my sympathies.
