Default Just bought a '99 Cherokee....

...and I've got a seemingly simple problem that maybe someone here can help with. First off, the cheesy plastic tube that feeds air from the air intake into the cylinder head (top of the engine at the front) is broken. I think this is called the crankcase vent tube or something like that. Seems like something I could just pick up at Autozone but I can't find a part number for it and nobody at the auto parts stores seems to know what the hell I'm talking about. Anybody know where I can find one of these?

Thanks,
Jon

Might find what you need at the boneyard. Would not cost as much as the stealership!!

You can replace em em cheap brand new...I think with shipping for the tube and elbow I paid like $14..jeepoemparts.com Just find out the part number and then search for it...cheap as heck and well worth it to buy a new one..You can also get something from napa according to another site and here's the info...

PCV hose set $18.72 NAPA 715-1366 Might be well worth checking out..

Thanks for the help, any idea what they called the part at jeepoemparts.com? I looked but all I found was the PCV valve. Going to give NAPA a shot later and if all else fails it's off to the pick and pull.

If you want a new one go with NAPA or the like, they provide good parts that wont kill you like the dealership will. Also know that if you have AAA you get discounted parts at NAPA.

If all else fails you will learn to love the local JY's.

If it's the bigger hose going from the front elbow to the air breather you can use any tube that will slide over the fittings or nipples or what ever you wanna call em...

The fitting is busted right at the elbow so getting anything to slip over that is a lost cause. I got sidetracked by my girlfriend's Blazer and trip out of town so I haven't had a chance to hit the junkyard or NAPA. NAPA sounds better than wandering through a pick and pull in the middle of the Texas summer, anyway. Next question, I was underneath my Jeep this morning looking at the front drivetrain... the manual references a vacuum controlled system that engages and disengages the front wheels from the differential, however, looking at the system I see nothing but differential, axle, and front driveshaft. It's a 231 transfer case with the Command-Trac system, and from the looks of it the front wheels are always engaging the front differential and driveshaft, regardless of whether I'm in 2 or 4WD. Does this sound right or am I missing something?

If you do have a disco front D30 there is a vacuum motor on the passenger side. Some don't have a disco D30 so not all XJs have that system.
Yes the system has the front D30 engaged through the transfer case so the drive shaft turns when the axle turns but is disconnected inside the transfer case unless you manually engage it.

I don't believe that the 99's came with a vaccum diconnect front axle. I'm not sure when they stopped using that but it seems, IRRC it was in the early 90's that they stopped using it.

Thanks for clearing that up. Not sure how much faith I have in Haynes manuals anymore.

Try this link for the elbow shaped vent tube:
http://www.teamcherokee.com/Engine/index.html

And 99xjlove is correct, 99's didn't come with vac.disc.

If you are a new XJ owner, spend $25 and buy Eric's book. Best $ you will spend for info and wisdom. ericsxj.com
