can i goto a junkyard and take a tire carrier and put it on my xj
i dont see why not

Rear tire carriers off of mid 80's s10/s15,work great.there r several artical just google it.We have forund 2 here for 25.00 each,winter project...junkyard tire carrier idea-tire-carrier-doors-001.jpg

Around here in the JY there are a lot of Isuzus, honda passports, old blazers etc. with rear swing out tire carriers. Most bolt to the bumper then then to the quarter panel. I haven't found an XJ with one yet though..
I thought about picking one up and figuring something out, but have not yet..
So if you do get one, let us know how it works out for you

There is a xj at my local JY that has a tire carrier on it, but it has a completely different hatch and also has a spot that it mounts to on the passenger side panel, i want to get it, but i dont think i am going to replace my quarter panel for a tire carrier
