Default JRC nut strip question....

not sure if this is the proper forum for this so if it needs to be moved please do so..

these came today ( http://www.jcroffroad.com/product/XJMISC/XJNTSP.html ) and i have to wonder about the strength. will these hold up to a class III standards? 350 Pound Tongue Weight and 3500 Pound Towing. maybe being stupid but damn they don't look strong enough for that..

Interesting that they've switched to expanding nut inserts... Mine were regular hex nuts welded to the strips. Wasn't that long ago that I bought those, either.

My attempt to use these with a skid and hitch was a total fail. The nutserts spun when tightening. Ymmv.

I replaced with a set of crown from quadretec and had no issues.

That was my immediate concern when I saw the photos... We used those extensively at one of my former jobs and if not set properly it's really easy to spin them.

ok i have to revisit this subject.

just got my hitch the other day. i gotta say to me it looks like the hardware that comes with the hitch would be a lot stronger.

am i wrong to think that those little square blocks and grade 8 hardware would be stronger then the strip using grade 5 hardware? just looks like the square block would be harder to pull through the frame.

then again i guess the square blocks only go on the drivers side and the passenger side has factory nut strips..

oh man am i over thinking this?? lol..

In my opinion, it is only the tongue weight that is the test as the towing involves pulling at right angles to the nuts. 350 pounds is not all that much to support. I'm sure these would be fine for the tongue. In a few years, they'll probably be rust-welded to the frame rail anyway (LOL).

that makes sense. maybe i'll use the strips and get some grade 8 hardware for the hitch.

Some neat stuff on that JCR site. I like the rear tire carrier. That would double the value of my XJ!

Just a way for them to save a few bucks, I like the old setup a lot better.

Your tongue weight should only be 10% of the trailer weight, why are you worried about 500lb tongue weight if you are only pulling 3500lb? The XJ is only rated for 5000lb towing with the weight distributing hitch and you will want an auxiliary transmission cooler. Assuming that you got a set where the nutserts were properly installed you will have no problems with either the 3500 or 5000lb set up.
