Default Jerky take off - Trans or diff??

When first driving the jeep before it gets warm the transmission seems to be a little herky-jerky when taking off but seems to run smoothly when the Jeep is warmed up. I did notice while accelerating uphill after the Jeep is warmed up that it would occasionally half shift down then immediately back into the taller gear and i can also hear a clunk coming from the rear end when this happens. I think the rear is a limited slip although I am not completely sure. Any idea what it might be?

Light brown before I changed it and no burnt smell. No change in behavior going from old fluid to New. I also changed the plugs and rotor to minimise the chance that the motor might have been miss firing.

Hmmm. "half shift down". So it doesn't drop down one gear? Might be the torque converter unlocking.

Oh, wait. You have a GRAND Cherokee. You'll get better help in that forum. This is for the Cherokee.

my first thought was that the tc valve was leaking but but it also does it once it's warmed up and driving.

What's the difference between the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee auto Transmissions?

Dunno, but the other forum exists because there are enough differences between the two vehicles that it matters. Folks who own Cherokees are not the best people to answer Grand Cherokee questions.
