Default Jeep wont start

So my step dad is about to pick up a 1986 Jeep Cherokee this is a beautiful Cherokee too, The only rust anywhere is surface rust the size of a golf ball on a door, Anyways it wont start. Its a 2.5l 4 cylinder, The guy we are buying it from says that he got it started and it ran fine once after that it wont. He says the engine turns but it wont fire. Any ideas?

Try starter fluid. If it starts and dies, you know you have spark at least...and some sort if fuel problem....bad/old fuel, plugged fuel filter and/or injectors, fuel pump or pickup failure. Think it through. Check compression too, by all means.

If you saw what kind of shape this thing is in for only $750 you wouldn't pass it up. We happen to have a inline 6 sitting in a shed that came out of a 92 Jeep that we might just drop in it. but we would like to get the little 4 running.

As said before narrow it down to fuel or spark spray a little ether or put a little gas in the carb/ tb whatever it is. See if it fires and we can go from there. I don't know what your induction system looks like but pull the air cleaner and you should know. Anyone know did they ever use tbi on these things?
