I Recently put an engine and transmission into a 1998 jeep Cherokee, the engine was from a 1996 jeep Cherokee and the transmission is from a 1989 jeep Cherokee, automatic. The engine finally fired up and idles fine, I put 4 quarts of dexron 3, and hooked up a tranny cooler only to find the tranny cooler had a huge leak in it, I might have lost 1/2 quart of tranny fluid. I brought it out on its first test drive after we got it together and the engine will rev when given gas but when I put it in drive it hardly goes forward? I read online that it could be low on fluid or a bad filter even? I'm not sure if 1/2 quart would make a big difference

try starting off in 1st, then shift up.
if that works, then it's most likely the TPS if the trans TCU checks out ok. make sure the inline fuse isn't blown, the one close to where it plugs into the tcu, under the passenger side dash.

Did you change all the wiring going the transmission and TCU, if you didn't there's nothing to run the solenoids. Thus in D the transmission will be in 4th.

Are you positive the torque converter is properly seated in the pump? Have you checked the fluid level while the transmission is warm with the vehicle on flat terrain?

I haven't checked fluid yet, the transmission was working properly when I pulled it from the other jeep, I just bolted it to the 98 jeep right after I pulled it out, with the 4 bolts to the fly wheel.

Did you make the electrical connections?

yes, I know it's not the best idea, my dad has been an electrical engineer for 18+ years and read up all the schematics, but I think it's the inline fuse. It takes off in 1st fine, so I can manually shift it until I get the fuse figured out
