Good advice. Ballast resistor is suspect.
By design, the ballast resistor is bypassed with the key in the full START position, so with a bad ballast, the engine usually starts, but dies as soon as the key is released back to the ON position.
A bad ballast resistor can either be bypassed or replaced. It is there only to reduce noise on the fuel pump circuit. They were eliminated starting in 1994.

... could b a number of problems... my icm went out n did that to me... could b fuel pump goin out or filter clogged... could have a short n the cps causing it to ground out n die... how'd this start??? Just go out one morning n she started doin this or did u start noticing little hesitations at bumps while drivin?!
I took the pcm and throttle body out to test in my other jeep wihich was the problem, I then go new parts for my daily driver n then put the original parts back in other truck n that's when it started, but before I messed with it the truck ran mint, its weird, I'm starting to think its the pick up in the disturbtor... its getting plenty fuel checked all that already

All the sensors and fuel injectors and ignition will power up for the first 3 seconds each time the vehicle is started. If something is wrong with either the crank or cam sensor it cuts power to the fuel injectors. So if it were me I would concentrate on both of those sensors and the ECM. Use the FSM and follow the correct proceedure to tests those sensors and report back what you find.

And I think it cuts power with the ASD relay. If you have one of those you could try jumpering that to ground so the relay stays closed and doesn't cut power to the fuel injectors.

Got 7 relays in a line under the hood? Second from the rear might be for the fuel pump. Two forward of that is the AC clutch, (maybe). You can try swapping the pump relay with that, (harmless).
The ASD relay, maybe the third from the rear, You might check that, and fuses as well....
Idk if this might work. You should have a "check engine" light?
1984-1990 w/AMC engine are pre-OBD.
1984-1986 w/GM V6-173 are OBD-I (GM control setup.)
1991-1995 are OBD-I (Chrysler)
1996-2001 are OBD-II (Chrysler)
The "Key Tricks"
Older (OBDI) models - Start with the ignition off. Within five seconds, switch the key on, off, on, off, on. ("On" is NOT "Start" and "Off" is NOT "Lock"). The "check engine" light will flash. Count the flashes. Each code is a two digit code, so a (for example) 23 would be FLASH FLASH (pause) FLASH FLASH FLASH (long pause). It will never flash more than 9 times, so watch for those pauses!
Newer (OBDII) models - Put the key into the ignition, push down the odometer reset button, then turn the key to RUN with your finger on the button - and then release the button. The odometer will go through 1111111 through 999999, then display the car's serial number. It will then show the error codes (it might show them starting with P). If this method does not work, try the OBDI method.
