My 92 has been down now for almost year. The local shops have been unable find the problem. I'm looking for any jeep shops that have a good reputation for solving difficult problems.

I read through it. What crank sensor has been installed? What diagnostic devices do you have? I'm willing to take a stab at it with you if you are interested.

I have an old SnapOn brick that gives us zero, nada, nothing.
What is amazing is reading through this forum about others with the same problem and no one has found the solution yet. I gotta say someone out there has fixed this before.
A relative had a 93 with the same problem and his mech found a wiring harness problem in the dash. Unfortunately, the mech is dead and any more details are gone. My plan is to get some help to pull the instrument panel. So a high end Jeep shop is my starting point.
When you perform the key dance what are your DTCs? Chris Jensen is in Southern California and knows an incredible amount of Chrysler tech.
A note on the CPS I had multiple units some dead out of the box and others perform perfectly. This inconsistency angered me so I went to a electronic manufacturer to make a run of them for me.

Sadly, there are not many shops around capable of dealing with these old Jeeps. I failed a smog test a few years ago and did a lot to "fix" it. It finally passed. Since the shop is a repair shop I asked if they had anyone or knew anyone that could diagnose and repair these old Jeeps. His response was "you mean besides you?" (referring to me). I even asked in the service dept of my local Jeep dealer and they backed away.
There are a lot of grounds, some easy to access, some not. Check/clean the grounds on the engine block (just aft of the distributor), the ground on the driver side fender well (near the battery).
Pull the cap off the distributor and wiggle the rotor side to side. Too much play in the shaft *could* cause a misfire.
If you're up for some "light reading", you can find the 1993 FSM here: https://cruiser54.com/?page_id=365 . It will have a bunch of troubleshooting charts and wiring diagrams. (close enough for your '92).
As you noted with your relative's '93, sometimes the wiring get's old and brittle and splices may cause intermittent problems. I had an issue with my #3 fuel injector (related to my failed smog test) that I finally traced to a bad splice in the injector harness.
Finally, cheap (aka Made in China) sensors can be borderline. There are plenty of posts of folks replacing sensors and still having problems. I stick with NTK/NGK or Standard on my Renix and have had good luck with them.
