First place I'd look is your parking brake. Don't rely on the engine & transmission to hold a car. Manual OR automatic, it's not made for that.
That's why you have a PARKING brake.
There is not a car on the road that has an EMERGENCY brake. That term is only used by the ignorant.
It's called a parking brake, and it's called that, and exists, for good reasons.
As for the clutch, either you don't have it adjusted correctly or it's gotten oil on it.

Hey Blue,.....what are you scaring newbies off for?....As far as I can tell, nobody (in the first two posts) has mentioned a word about an 'emergency' brake....so I don't understand your little rant...I understand your feelings about calling things by the wrong name, but...

If you're parking in your steep driveway with the front of the XJ pointing uphill, the parking brake probably isn't holding. I've never had any vehicle that would. The parking brakes just don't hold as strong backwards as they do forwards. Try it... On flat ground, place the vehicle in drive, the the parking brake on, give it a little gas and see if it moves, then do the same thing in reverse.
The parking brake might be out of adjustment. Maybe try parking the other direction. Maybe you need to chock the wheels, depending on just how steep your driveway is.

The only time I have ever used mine is when I let my pickup with a manual transmission sit and idle to warm up when it is really cold or I otherwise need to be out of the truck while the engine is running and it must be in neutral. Automatics I just use Park. Never had any problems so far, but then I always park on level ground.

The parking brake cable is separate from the regular brakes. Adjusting the star wheel won't affect the parking brake. If you're parking on a steep hill with a manual transmission, and not using the parking brake, then that is your problem. Just putting it in gear, there might not be enough engine compression to keep it from rolling.

Yes it will. But maybe not in the way you think. I'll explain:
To get the slack out of your parking brake, like when you have to pull it all to way upwards to do something, you can solve that by adjusting the rear brake shoes > which in turn actually reduces that slack. Its what I got advised to do when got to that subject during another thread. It's what I've done. And its what worked. After all, your parking brake is 'connected' to the rear shoes.
Therefore, adjusting the parking brake does NOT automatically require you to tighten up any other cable or connection...

The funny thing is everyone keeps telling him to adjust the parking brake and to adjust the rear bakes. But he never even mentioned that he has used the parking brake. If he doesn't use the parking brake no amount of adjusting will help him.

Maybe I should stop cleaning out the backpages of the forum and bumping these threads-with-no-replies in an attempt to provide these people with answers.....the OP's might have died in the meantime...
