Jeep slams when going from park to reverse

Default Jeep slams when going from park to reverse

88 xj, aw-4, 4wd, 160kmi, 4.5in lift on 31s

when i shift into reverse from park, the jeep jerks and goes bang. doesn't do it all the time but 95%. doesn't do it in 4wd . checked the rear drive line ujoints and replaced. changed trans filter. began doing this last spring before i raised the jeep an 1.5 in. put a t-case drop in then.

Any clues would be helpful. tired of wondering if im gonna blow up the trans

My Durango does this. I was told that it could be back lash.

Mine does the same thing. It appears to shift a lot smoother when 4WD is engaged (going into reverse) than when in 2WD. Anyone know what this means?

maybe trans mount is shot, my 91 mustang did that till I changed it.

Mine was making a clunk too when putting it in gear, it was the yoke on the back end. I tightend it up and it quit. The easy way to check is with the park brake on and in netural wiggle the driveshaft back on forth. It should show something if thats what it is.

your not talken about a slight jerk when u put it in drive or revr are you? i have had 3 cherokees and they all have a lil jerk /pull frwd i think thats with them all. ur prob not talken about this but i wana thro this in just incase any new people are mistaken

its a combination of all the lash in your driveline. Its very common. things that can help/fix are, trans mounts, new u joints, shimming your rear ring and pinion. have someone sit in your vehicle with it running and go from N to D to N to R while your are down looking. Make sure the person keeps there foot on the brake so as not to role, you want to be sitting still. You'll see where the lash is coming from... Worst case its that you need to shim your diff.

your line pressure could be spiking at times. could be caused by a sticking accumulater.

line pressure spiking, is that like head light fluid getting low? no seriously what did you mean? it def is not slipping. oh and i have alot of forward and reverse movement in my t-case. when i put any thing in my roof rack and use the tires for a ladder, it rolls back and forth a bit. when changing the u-joints i messed with yokes. rear diff was solid, but the t case would spin 1/4 in or so back and forth. not sure if this has anything to do with it, seems that it would slam in drive as well as reverse.

solved the problem with your help. thank you! it was the trans mount missing a bolt! could grab the rear drive line and give a good shake,had to try harder than checking u joints, the transfer case would buck. braced the t case, dropped the cross member and discovered the prev. owner didn't put one of the 2 bolts back in holding the mount to the transmission( speechless donkey). bought a new mount, the old was a bit bent from being held from on side and flopping. now it has a good solid shift into reverse, and a shifts smoother between 3 and 4. didn't even realize that was a problem, just thought it was a jeep thing.

Great to hear OP, as far as the durango, have you checked your U-joints, those are one of the biggest reasons for the clunk. I read the thread and didn't see anyone mention it, just figured I would toss that out there.

There's no clunk. When you shift into reverse it SLAMS into gear.
